What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of yearsworldwide. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin and sterile needles into the body at specific acupuncture points.

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways or meridians in your body. In TCM, pain or illness is due to the imbalance or blockage of qi within the body. Acupuncture is used to unblock this stagnation, which facilitates the free flow of qi and supports balance.

With the help of modern research, Western medicine and practitioners view acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation has been said to boost your body's natural painkillers, increasing blood flow and reducing pain and inflammation. Current theories on the mechanism of acupuncture also support the release of neurotransmitters, normalizing the autonomic nervous system, and regulating the body toward homeostasis.

"There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine."
- National Institute of Health, 1997 Consensus on Acupuncture

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes! Acupuncture is being used by millions of Americans each year to help them get healthy and stay well, without the use of drugs or surgery. Acupuncturists are required by the FDA to undergo extensive education, including many years of study and practicum in both Eastern and Western medicine. Acupuncturists take comprehensive national board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and must be licensed by the state in order to practice. Also required by law, Acupuncturists are trained and certified in Clean Needle Technique (CNT) which follows strict guidelines using pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety.
