What to Expect & Does acupuncture hurt?

If this is your first acupuncture treatment, it is only natural to have questions or even fear the unknown. The most common question we get is "Does acupuncture hurt?". Generally, most patients are pleasantly surprised that acupuncture does not hurt. We try to inform all new patients that acupuncture needles are very different from the hypodermic needles they receive at the doctor's office. Acupuncture needles are thin and flexible - approximately the diameter of a human hair. There is no hole or hollow center like western needles because we don't put anything into the body like medicine or take anything out like blood. Some people may feel or sense a little pinch upon insertion of the needle, but others may feel nothing. Everyone's sensation or experience is different. Learn more >
