What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Each patient is different, therefore their feeling and sensation are explained differently. Depending on what you're being treated for and the location of the needle, you may feel different sensations- or nothing at all.   Some patients may feel a unique sensation that Oriental medicine calls de qi. Patients may describe de qi as a feeling of warmth, heaviness, pressure, or an ache. The sensation may be localized at the specific acupuncture point or travel. Patients have also described a tingling or "electrical" sensation that moves up or down, though this is less common. Once the needles are inserted, most patients begin to feel an increased sense of relaxation. Most patients use this time to relax, meditate, pray or sleep as their body begins to heal. After the treatment is complete, most patients leave feeling relaxed both mentally and physically.

Please know, it is our primary concern that our patient's feel safe, comfortable and informed. Any questions or comments are always encouraged and welcomed before, during or after treatments.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative, and acupuncture is not a "quick fix", so more than one treatment is most likely necessary. No two patients are alike and everyone responds differently to treatment. The chief complaint of the patient, the duration of the condition and severity also influence the treatment plan. For example, if a condition is acute, patients respond faster than compared to a chronic condition. Most patients feel a difference or sense of relief in as little as 2 to 4 visits. Other more chronic conditions may take as long as 12 visits.

Preventative treatments and treatments for general stress relief and well-being may also be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
